Southeast Asia's Golden Triangle has historically been known for being one of the world's main opium producing regions. The term "Golden Triangle" has also been co-opted by regional tour operators to specifically describe the area near the junction of the borders of Laos, Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand and the meeting point of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers. It is a green, hilly, primarily rural region where the essence of the opium trade still hangs in the air.
